The Highlands have three representatives among the shortlists for the 2024 Proud Scotland Awards.

Held annually in the central belt, the awards celebrate Scotland’s most deserving individuals, companies, charities or groups who championing diversity and inclusion throughout the country – as nominated by the public.

This year there are 15 categories plus a hall of fame award, which is the only one not to have a shortlist as it is chosen solely by the judging panel.

Popular drag queen Venus Guytrap is one of the nominees, being shortlisted in the performer/entertainer category.

Venus, also known as Darryl Alexander, will be going up against fellow drag queens Cherry West and Mrs C, as well as singer Lee Cammy, community music group the Rainbow Ukes and the Diversity Quota.

Joining Venus Guytrap as Inverness representatives on the shortlist are Inverness Royal Academy, who have been shortlisted for the education award.

The Highland capital school is up against the duo of Leigh Anderson & Mark Steenson, Louise Shields, Dunfermline’s Queen Anne High School and Scott Whitefield.

Care home group Parklands are also up for one of the awards after being shortlisted in the charity/group initiative category, recognising the impact or actions taken to support the LGBTQ+ community by a charity organisation or group initiative.

Parklands will be vying for the award alongside northern neighbours Pride in Moray, Pride Outside, The Hive LGBT+ Centre and Waverley Care.
